Propane Safety

Propane is a very safe fuel.  But as with any energy source, there are steps that you should take to further ensure your safety:

  1. Be alert to the smell of propane when near propane appliances or containers, if you detect a gas leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the house and call your local propane supplier or the local fire department from a neighbor’s telephone.
  2. Learn what propane smells like.  Ask your propane supplier for a scratch and sniff pamphlet to help you and your family recognize its distinctive odor.
  3. Know where your gas lines are located, so you won’t damage them when digging or working in the yard.
  4. Change or clean your furnace filters regularly as recommended by the manufacturer.
  5. Don’t store cleaning fluids, oil-soaked rags, gasoline, or other flammable liquids near a gas-burning appliance where vapors could be ignited.
  6. Always read and follow the operating and lighting instructions in the operation guide or warning labels for your appliance.
  7. The pilot is a safety device.  If you have trouble lighting the pilot or keeping it lit, this may indicate a problem.  Call your propane supplier or service technician for assistance.
  8. Never tamper or force the control on your gas appliance.  If you cannot operate the control knob, switch, or other device call your propane supplier.
